Miranda de l Douro – thus in Mirandese – or Miranda do Douro – in Portuguese. In Miranda, the Mirandese language has been maintained as variety of Asturleonés, and the place names of its territory are presented in Mirandese, as well as in Portuguese. In principle, in Miranda we have the homonymous Latin term with the value of “mirador, watchtower”, from a “that is to be admired”, “worthy of admiration”. However, it cannot be ruled out that it could be, in reality, a term adapted from an earlier pre-Roman word, perhaps with the value of “mount”, “hill”, “hill” and which could contain the Celtic component randa “limit, extreme”, as in Aranda or Peñaranda.
