Puerto Seguro, in the foothills of the Arribes, is the result of a retoponymization -until 1916 it was Barba de Puerco-, and the same happens with its neighbour Villar de Argañán -formerly Villar de Puerco-. The new toponym was motivated by the XII Marquis of Puerto Seguro, Luis Carvajal y Melgarejo, deputy for Vitigudino and intercessor in the change of the name.
